Here is a chance to log some volunteer hours and help an underserved community! This event is going to need a lot of volunteers, so please consider helping out. The event flyer is attached. To volunteer, email Luly Beckles at: hbeckles@wakehealth.edu

Below is the message from Luly who is Safe Kids Northwest Piedmont Coordinator:

In May 2007, we held our first Annual Bike Safety event, in memory of my son Joshua and continued to do so until 2018.  In recent years, we have also partnered with other community events, such as Walk and Roll Winston-Salem (2015 – 2018),  Biking WINS (2021) Bikemore and Gears and Guitar (2022) to offer a community bike safety event.

This year, I partnered with the Hispanic Task Force (a group of community leaders and members of the Safe Kids coalition) to organize a health and educational fair for a diverse/underserved community. The event will be held on Saturday, June 3 from 10 am to 1 pm at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, in Winston-Salem.

There will be a bike rodeo conducted by the Winston-Salem Police Department Downtown Bike Patrol, bike safety education and Free bicycle helmets, thanks to the NC DOT grant. The church has a diverse congregation.  It has a large Hispanic / Latino congregation, as well as Kareni (Southeast Asia), African, Filipino and Polish families.  Please let me know if you are available to assist on that day. Attached is the flyer.

16 years have gone by since our first Bike Safety Day.  At times it feels like it was last year when we held our first event, but the years have gone by.  Some of the children who attended that first event are now parents. One of the families who attended that first event, reached out this week to inquire about when the annual bike safety day is going to be.  This is a testimony of the impact our collective efforts have had in our community.  I thank each of you for your commitment to bike safety and your wiliness to partner with me.

Best regards,
